10 Best Cat Toys That Will Keep Your Kitty Busy

I am a cat parent and trained my indoor rescue kitten to enjoy walking on a leash.

10 Best Cat Toys for Cats and Kittens

I rescued a very busy kitten. In order to keep her from tearing up the house with all her energy, I've invested in quite a few cat toys. I've seen which interactive toys intrigue her and keep her busy for hours, and which ones don't. Whether you're shopping for a cat-lover or your cat, these toys are sure to impress and will keep kitty busy for hours.

1. PetFusion AMBUSH Feather Toy

  • Price: $22.95
  • Specifics: Battery-operated
  • Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (425 Amazon Reviews)

My cats love this toy. What makes it so enjoyable? A feather arm continuously pokes out of a hole on a random cycle—that means that your cat never knows what's coming! It greatly spurs the hunting instinct. I've seen my cat try to walk away only to come back for more play. It's simply addictive. Not only that, but it has a sleek look and is fairly durable—so we just keep it out on our floor.

The battery life is good and the device is fairly quiet. In addition, the product comes with several feather-arm replacements, which I haven't had to replace in almost a year.

This product requires batteries (but they last a while!). You may also want to keep this product away from a dog as they could easily pull the feather want out of the toy. Otherwise, the toy is fairly durable.

Ways to Enhance This Toy

We throw brown shipping paper over the top of the toy to give it some "mystery." My cat goes crazy when she hears the paper rustle. The LED feature also allows the toy to glow in the dark, so it can be used in a dimly lit environment.

2. Organic Cat Grass Kitty Mug

  • Price: $15.97
  • Specifics: Organic
  • Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (353 Amazon Reviews)

Yes, yes, catnip is all the rage, but what about organic cat grass? This stuff grows fast and is easily replenished, and cat's simply love it! Not only that, but eating grass is a natural process for felines—it aids digestion, helps them to settle their stomach, and helps to get rid of lodged hairballs. Not to mention, the mug is pretty cute (it comes in black, too).

Requires occasional maitenance—sunlight and watering. This grass tends to regenerate rapidly, however, so a little bit of sun and water and some sprinkling of new seeds will help it look its best. Don't leave your cat unattended with the dirty—they might dig it up and fling it around.

Ways to Enhance This Toy

Offer it a little at a time—set it down for 10 minutes and then put it back outside to regenerate.

3. Catit Senses Digger

  • Price: $14.99
  • Specifics: Can be used with other treats
  • Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (1,123 Amazon Reviews)

Does your cat like to stick its paw in a water glass or try to reach into a fish tank? Well, redirect that behavior with the digger toy. I use this toy with my cat's favorite freeze-dried shrimp. Cats love to dig—especially of its for something tasty. I highly recommend this product. It's durable, does not require any maintenance, and has a modern-looking design. It's perfect for the household.

Skip the treats and use your own if your cat has special dietary needs.

Ways to Enhance This Toy

Use low-calorie treats.

4. Shop4Omni Kitty Play Tunnel Toy

  • Price: $9.95
  • Specifics: 4 feet long
  • Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (55 Amazon Reviews)

Alongside the PetFusion AMBUSH toy, this has to be my cat's absolute favorite. She simply loves chasing toys through the tunnel. Any little crinkle in the tunnel drives her crazy, and she loves to ambush our dog and jump out at people walking by. This tunnel keeps her busy for hours. It comes in multiple colors and is collapsable, so it can be stored easily.

None. Don't let your dog or children trample it because the wires will bend and the tube will become misshapen with heavy weight. Our tube is still standing strong after many, many tumbles and tackles.

Ways to Enhance This Toy

Toss a toy inside the tube or stuff some brown packing paper in the tube to enhance kitty's experience.

5. PETBABA Cat Wand With Invisible String

  • Price: $8.99 (on Amazon)
  • Specifics: Retractable
  • Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (82 Amazon Reviews)

All cats love feathers and things that fly in the air. The invisible strand is made of heavy "fishing" line and is super durable. It gives the illusion of natural feathers in flight. The product also comes with a replaceable feather top. The foam handle makes it comfortable and light to hold—this is a toy you can wave around for hours while your cat stays busy. It is especially good for high-energy kittens. It certainly tires my cat out.

The feathers will splinter and degrade over time. Also, I would not leave the toy out around my cat in case they find it—they could chew the clear line in half and/or destroy the feathers. It's best to hide it somewhere special, like in a drawer.

Ways to Enhance This Toy

This product is sold with other attachables as well—if you are not a fan of feathers (due to sourcing), you can go for foam crickets or similar—simply browse.

Some cat guardians are not a fan of the laser pointer because the cat can never "get it"—but my cat is simply addicted to it and it gives her great exercise. Never point the laser in your cat's eye!

6. Rechargeable Cat Laser Pointer

  • Price: $18.99
  • Specifics: Rechargable, USB Charging, Flashlight setting
  • Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (139 Amazon Reviews)

Yes, we know that cats LOVE lasers. Some owners may skip on this product because the play style can feel "unfair," but my crazy cat loves it and literally "begs" for us to pull it out. It also simply exhausts her better than any other toy. The cool thing about this product is that it's rechargeable via USB, and there are three settings, so it doubles as a flashlight. If you really want to tire your cat out while you sit on the couch, this is the toy for both of you.

The cat never quite "catches" the toy—so some owners aren't a fan of this play style. The rationale behind this is that the urge to catch the laser can become frustrating and exhausting for your pet.

Ways to Enhance This Toy

Use it to train your cat. We use it to herd her into a particular room (when it's time to go to bed), or to distract her away from something she shouldn't be into (like behind the tv). Our dog also likes to chase this out in the field and night. It's a great product for exercising your animals.

7. Handcrafted Cat Cave for Cat-Lovers

  • Price: $68.88
  • Specifics: Eco-friendly
  • Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (777 Amazon Reviews)

Ok, so not only are these beds adorable and come in multiple creatures, shapes, and styles, but cats LOVE them. These beds are handcrafted and eco-friendly, so they make for a wonderful gift for the cat-lover in your love. All cats need a safe place to hangout and sleep, and these beds perfectly imitate a natural den. I gifted one to a good friend of mine and her cat totally loves it (and she does, too!). These gifts are quite trendy.

This gift can be a little pricey but it's really well made and will last a lifetime.

Ways to Enhance This Toy

Give it as a gift! Since this toy is so special (in terms of quality, craftsmanship, and design), it makes a great gift for a cat-lover. It's also constructed with eco-friendly materials and the quality is simply there. It's a perfect gift for a feline-loving friend.

8. Shiny Mylar Crinkle Balls

  • Price: $5.95 (find on Amazon)
  • Specifics: Comes with 12
  • Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (118 Amazon Reviews)

These are the cheapest most effective toys I have offered my kitten. They crinkle and toss easily, and they roll irregularly—they also shine and shimmer. Everything about this toy triggers the hunting instinct. I toss them into my cat's play tunnel and she stays busy for hours. We probably have 5 scattered around the house. Another positive is that our dog does not take interest in them unlike her soft mouse toys. I highly recommend this product for cats of all ages.

Over months of use, the mylar toy begins to flatten and lose its luster, but they are cheap to replace.

Ways to Enhance This Toy

Toss them in a cat tunnel and watch the magic happen.

9. Come-With-Me-Kitty Harness Cat Leash

  • Price: $14.95 (Amazon and in the article link below)
  • Specifics: Comes in multiple colors and sizes
  • Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (2,458 Amazon Reviews)

Indoor cats need outdoor time—they need to fulfill their instinct. Off all the harnesses and soft harnesses I've tried on my cat for walking them outside (yes, I've wasted some money trying to find the right one), this leash is it! The brilliant thing about it is that the leash itself is a bungy. So when your cat pounces, it doesn't yank them backwards and send them off in a fit. It's extremely safe and easy to get over their head—making it more pleasant than other leashes. Always make sure to use this safely and pick the right size. It comes in multiple colors!

You have to get it on your cat first.

Ways to Enhance This Toy

Reward your cat with treats as you put this on them. For tips on how to train your cat to walk on a leash, consider reading up on my method. I've been walking my cat on a leash since she was a kitten. Essentially, you want to expose your cat to the possibility slowly and first introduce them to the outdoors in a gradual manner. Always do so safely. Have fun!

10. Petstages Succulent Catnip Crinkle Toy

  • Price: $4.79 (Amazon)
  • Specifics: Comes with 3 toys
  • Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars (33 Amazon Reviews)

Feathers and catnip go together . and succulents are simply cute. The catnip in this toy is POTENT so beware. Your cat will go nuts for it. If you are conscious of what kind of catnip you bring into your household, you may want to opt for a refillable toy and find an organic source instead. But, if you are going for style and something cheap—3 toys for 4 dollars, go for these cute succulents.

The feathers fall off easily.

Best toys for indoor cats

The best toys for indoor cats are cat toys that will keep your kitty amused and healthy. It’s pretty easy to keep a dog entertained and well exercised: You just slap a leash on him and go for walkies. With a cat, it’s a bit trickier and it’s up to you to ensure they aren’t lazing around the house bored.

Cats have evolved as predatory animals. With keen eyesight, agile muscles and sharp teeth and claws, they’re born hunters. Nowadays, the majority of cats are kept indoors to protect both themselves and native Australian wildlife. But just because you take the cat out of the wild doesn’t mean the wild is taken out of the cat. They still have all these built in instincts that come out even when indoors.

How to choose the best cat toys

When choosing a cat toy you really need to try different things to see what your cat likes. The good thing is that most cat toys are inexpensive, so you don’t lose much if your pet takes little or no interest. If they don’t play with a toy, don’t take this as a sign that your cat isn’t playful – just keep trying different options.

We also fully suggest you persist with cat toys several times after buying them. Some don’t have instant appeal, and many cats are nervous about changes to their environment, so something like a new scratching post may intimidate them to start with. We’ve known cats ignore toys, trees, and beds for months before suddenly loving them.

If your cat stays indoors, play is an essential part of their day, so most vets recommend a minimum of 15-30 minutes of play per day. This is for exercise and bonding, so it’s very important. Try to choose toys that will give your cat a work-out and require personal input from you, so you’re more involved in your cat’s play.
